In computer system memory is divided into the different sections known as primary storage sections and secondary storage section. These sections are sometimes referred to as internal memory and external memory respectively.
External memory is used for long term storage of information which is not in current use. The internal memory holds programs, data and information which are currently required for the execution of a program.
