ICU equipments

When you first come to visit a relative in the ICU, one of the things that may concern you is the number of devices and machines associated with your family member. ICUs have different types of instruments or equipment which are as follows -

Ventilator

A ventilator is used when patients are so weak or ill that they cannot even breathe on their own. When your family members or friends are on ventilators, they will not be able to talk to you. If you have to talk to them, then you should ask such simple questions, which can be answered in a yes or no. The patient is often highly sedated to keep them at rest, so they may be sleepy and therefore cannot always respond to you.

Heart monitor

A heart monitor looks like a television with colored lines running across the screen. These lines measure the patient's heart activity. The heart monitor is attached to the patient by a sticky pad (adhesive pad) to the skin. Beeps and other noises are alerts given by electronic machines to let the nurse know that something needs attention.

Feeding Tubes

If a patient is unable to eat normally, food is given in his nose, through a small cut made in the stomach, or through a tube in a vein.

Drains and catheters

A dance is a tube used to remove any buildup of blood or fluid from the body. The catheter is a thin tube inserted into the bladder to drain urine.

These machines and monitors help make intensive care as safe and effective as possible.
